Nord Stream 2, the company building a gas pipeline between Russia and Germany, has reportedly requested a permit allowing it to use pipe-laying vessels with anchors to complete the final roughly 120-kilometre stretch of pipeline in Danish waters.

Nord Stream 2 has, as a precautionary measure, submitted an amendment request in accordance with the guidance received from the Danish Energy Agency (DEA), Nord Stream 2 EU representative Sebastian Sass told New Europe on June 19, adding that Nord Stream 2 will implement the project in accordance with the construction permit and as assessed in the Environmental Impact Assessment.

The International Energy Agency plans to revise down its oil-demand forecasts next week because of the spreading coronavirus. “I am going to announce it Monday morning in Paris,” IEA chief Fatih Birol told a Congressional hearing in Washington on Thursday. “The impacts are already severe mainly because the transport sector is heavily affected.”

Last month, the Paris-based adviser to industrialized nations warned that the virus could curb annual growth in oil consumption to the lowest since 2011, but still called for 800,000 barrels a day of growth.

Brent crude prices topped $70 a barrel for the first time in nearly five months on Thursday as tightening supply continues to offset concerns about slowing global demand and rising US shale production. The international oil benchmark rose as much as 1 per cent to $70.03 a barrel, the highest since mid November.

Its US counterpart, West Texas Intermediate, gained 0.5 per cent to $62.77. Brent has been flirting with the $70-a-barrel milestone this week, with the rally underpinned by Opec’s intentional production cuts and output drops from sanction-hit Venezuela and Iran.
