A 500 megawatt solar photovoltaic plant, described by Spanish utility Iberdrola as “Europe’s largest,” sent its first megawatt hour of energy to the grid earlier this week, a welcome bright spot for an industry that in the months ahead could experience difficulties brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Núñez de Balboa facility is located in Extremadura, a region in the west of Spain. According to Iberdrola, it has over 1.4 million solar panels and will be able to supply energy to 250,000 people per year.

The global solar photovoltaic (PV) services market is expected to record a 16% growth between 2019 and 2030, according to Technavio. The research firm forecasts revenue generation within the market to reach $10.81 billion. The year over year growth rate for 2019 is estimated at 13.71%.

One of the key drivers for the market will be the increasing new installations and aging asset base of solar pv modules.

The continued decline in the prices of solar modules and the increasing support from governments is positively impacting on the solar market.

Thailand plans to build the world’s largest floating solar farms to power Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy and to boost the country’s share of clean energy.

State-run Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand will float 16 solar farms with a combined capacity of more than 2.7 gigawatts in nine of its hydroelectric dam reservoirs by 2037, said Thepparat Theppitak, a deputy governor with the utility. Several of the proposed projects are more than double the size of the world’s largest floating system now and the venture dwarfs the 1.3 gigawatts of generation installed globally as of October.

New figures from BloombergNEF (BNEF) show that corporations bought a record amount of 13.4GW of clean energy through power purchase agreements (PPAs) in 2018, well over double the previous record of 6.1GW set in 2017.

The research firm’s latest Corporate Energy Market Outlook, reveals that 121 companies in 21 different countries signed up to buy renewable energy last year. More than 60% of those purchases were in the US, where PPAs to buy 8.5GW of power were signed, almost three times 2017’s figure.

For the global energy industry, China’s importance is hard to overstate. It is the world’s largest oil importer and is on course to be the largest gas importer this year. It accounts for about half the world’s coal consumption and almost a third of global investment in “clean” energy. If the Chinese economy were to go into a downturn, producers of energy commodities and technologies all around the world would be affected. China accounted for just over a quarter of the increase in world oil demand last year, according to Opec, and is expected to make about the same contribution this year, with its own consumption growth slowing in tandem with the global total.

A solar power project to connect villages in Malawi has had a “life-changing” impact for rural communities. The initiative, led by Strathclyde University researchers, has seen affordable energy supply businesses set up in four villages.

The partnership, which has been backed by a £600,000 grant from the Scottish government, ensures locals own and operate the equipment.

It includes battery chargers and power connections for other small businesses.

Only 12% of Malawi’s 18 million population is connected to the main electricity grid, which dips to 2% in rural areas.

A solar and energy storage facility established by AES Distributed Energy and Kauai Island Service Cooperative (KIUC) is located in a settlement of Lāwa on the southern shore of Kauai.

The plant has a power of 28 MW and has an energy storage capacity of 100 MWh to 5 hours. With the established PV plant, 11 percent of the electricity demand in the Kauai region is met, and Hawaii is expected to increase the share of electricity generation from renewable energy to more than 50 percent.

With the Paris Agreement governments agreed that global greenhouse gas emissions need to be net-zero by 2050 to limit global warming to well below 2°C; but current emission reductions efforts fall short reaching this goal, the world is currently on track to 3°C+. The energy and especially the power sector with its fossil fuels coal, oil and natural gas is the dominant source of emissions.

Two solar power bases in northwest China’s Qinghai Province, with a total installed power generating capacity of 1 GW, were launched and connected to the grid Saturday. Each of the two demonstration bases directly managed by the National Energy Administration in the cities Delingha and Golmud, the Mongolian-Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Haixi, has a generating capacity of 500 MW.

The Golmud base sells its electricity at 0.316 yuan (5 U.S. cents) per kWh, lower than the 0.325 yuan benchmark price of electricity generated by coal-fired power plants.
