The deep freeze that afflicted the center of the US last week caused massive power outages in Texas and surrounding states. The plight of millions without power and heat captured the headlines and attracted world-wide attention.

What little discussion there was of shortages at gasoline stations and of natural gas outages, was in the context of the power outages. (The gas stations couldn’t pump fuel due to power outages, and natural gas is the leading fuel for generating electricity nationwide, including in Texas.)

It is the largest source of energy used by American consumers and businesses—larger than oil.

Oil major Royal Dutch Shell on Thursday outlined the details of its near-term and long-term plans to transition to cleaner energy, saying its oil production and total carbon emissions have already peaked.

Shell said it aims to reduce net carbon emissions by between 6% to 8% by 2023 when compared to 2016 levels. The target jumps up to 20% by 2030, 45% by 2035, and 100% by 2050.

Even though the United States has achieved the long-sought goal of energy self-sufficiency, energy security remains a strategic and economic challenge. Despite “self–sufficiency,” the U.S. still imports significant quantities of oil and natural gas, as well as solar panels and wind turbine components, and prices forall of these products reflect global market dynamics. Traditional concerns about global supply disruptions remain, and new risks have also emerged.

Domestic energy availability can be impacted by storms, terrorism and cyber threats.
