Germany has reached its target of one million registered battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, said the government in a press release. This means the country has reached its 2020-goal around about half a year later than originally planned.

Fifty-four percent of the registered electric vehicles are battery-electric, 46 percent plug-in hybrids, said the government. “Our transport will be irreversibly converted to renewable energies,” said economy minister Peter Altmaier and called reaching the target a “decisive milestone”.

The demand for energy-efficient building renovation programmes offered by Germany’s government in the context of its Climate Action Programme 2030 remains high in the second quarter of 2020, even as the coronavirus pandemic took a grim toll on economic activity between April and June. According to the economy ministry (BMWi), credits and grants worth 14.5 billion euros haven been issued by the national development bank KfW in the first half of the year to retrofit more than 215,000 housing units as well as commercial and public buildings.

France and Germany are pooling efforts to kick-start battery cell production in Europe aiming to take on rivals from Asia which dominate the global market, top officials from both nations said.

Germany will put up 1 billion euros ($1.13 billion) and France 750 million euros in subsidies to co-finance building factories in their respective countries, said Economy and Energy Minister Peter Altmaier and Bruno Le Maire, who is France’s economy and finance minister.

The joint initiative brings Europe a step closer in creating a new industry from scratch, Le Maire told reporters in Berlin after a meeting on Tuesday.
