Power plant developers and operators plan to install more than 6 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity at sites mostly along the U.S. eastern seaboard over the next seven years, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in a report on Thursday.

While the Biden administration has set a goal of reaching 30 GW offshore capacity by 2030, from just 42 megawatts currently with 2 small projects, the Biden administration noted that projects include the New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia coasts and Lake Erie near Cleveland, Ohio.

The Biden administration is partnering with 11 East Coast states to accelerate development of offshore wind facilities and create jobs by supporting a domestic supply chain for the industry, the White House said on Thursday.

With this development, it is part of President Joe Biden’s effort to combat climate change by expanding clean energy technologies. The management set a target to increase the capacity from only 42 megawatts currently to 30 gigawatts by 2030 with 2 small projects.

The U.S. wants to expand its offshore wind capacity to 30 gigawatts by 2030, a move the Biden administration hopes will generate thousands of jobs and unlock billions of dollars in investment in coming years.

The target, announced by the Departments of Energy, Interior and Commerce on Monday, represents a significant ramp-up of America’s fledgling offshore wind industry, which trails other parts of the world.

Danish energy firm Orsted and TSMC, a Taiwan-headquartered semiconductor company which supplies businesses such as Apple, have signed a deal described as “the world’s largest renewables corporate power purchase agreement.” Announced Wednesday, the 20-year deal will see TSMC – also known as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company – purchase all the energy produced by Orsted’s yet-to-be-built 920-megawatt offshore wind farm off Taiwan.

The fixed price contract will come into force when commercial operations at the facility begin.

Both the world’s largest offshore wind farm and the world’s largest complex of wind farms will soon appear off the British coasts, showing an unprecedented value of renewable energies. Hornsea One by the Danish energy company Ørsted (formerly DONG Energy) and Dogger Bank’s three projects developed by the Scottish SSE will make Britain the biggest offshore wind market in the world.

The largest single offshore wind farm under construction is Hornsea One (1,218MW), while Dogger Bank is made of three projects (Dogger Bank Creyke Beck A, Dogger Bank Creyke Beck B and Teesside A—each with a capacity of 1,200MW).
