Following a long and comprehensive evaluation programme, Elektromotoren und Gerätebau Barleben (EMB), the market-leading German manufacturer of Buchholz relays, has approved the use of Nynas’ new bio-based transformer fluid NYTRO® BIO 300X in the company’s products. This renewable and biodegradable transformer liquid has been shown to work safely and correctly at all temperatures with the full range of designs and sizes of Buchholz relays.

Nynas’ new innovative insulating liquid NYTRO® BIO 300X has been successfully delivered to and tested in a transformer serving electricity customers in Gothenburg, Sweden. The city’s utility company Göteborg Energi opted to use the bio-based and biodegradable insulating liquid in a transformer located in a sensitive water protection area.

“As the transformer is located near a source of drinking water, we needed to make absolutely sure that no oil is spilled in the area, and we needed to use an insulating liquid that is highly biodegradable,” says Ferruccio Vuinovich, Planning Engineer, Göteborg Energi.

A 40 MVA, 145 kV transformer was filled with the sustainable insulating liquid NYTRO BIO 300X and tested by Končar’s technical team in Zagreb, Croatia.

“The thermal and dielectric tests on the transformer filled with NYTRO BIO 300X were completed successfully, and the unit is considered fully functional,” said Ivanka Radić, responsible for transformer oil at Končar D&ST. “As expected, the DGA results before and after the IEC 60076-2 standard temperature rise test were perfectly acceptable.” The ultra-low viscosity of NYTRO BIO 300X also means that it provides enhanced cooling in the transformer.

“NYTRO BIO 300X is the result of years of intensive research. We are now able to offer a 100% renewable product with superior performance. It is a true innovation,” says Koen Kempeneer, Global Market Manager Electrical Industry at Nynas.

A key advantage of this new fluid is that it offers exceptionally good cooling thanks to its ultra-low viscosity. The transformer’s winding hot spot temperature can be significantly reduced.
