In one corner Binderbauer, chief executive of TAE Technologies, shows off a new machine that blasts cancer tumors with a neutron beam. Engineers huddle in a control room. <p>That’s the name of TAE’s 100-foot-long prototype nuclear fusion reactor, a magnificent assemblage of stainless steel vessels, electromagnets and particle accelerator tubes. Once every eight minutes Norman emits a clang, as it transforms 100 million watts of electricity into a cloud of 30 million degree Celsius plasma that it blasts with beams of protons (the simplest form of hydrogen).</p>

<p>The EU has set targets of reducing emissions by 40% compared to 1990 levels, and by up to 95% by 2050 – or net zero. An essential part of that plan will be phasing out the burning of coal, the highest-emitting fossil fuel which is still used heavily in countries such as Poland and Germany.</p>

Just last month China&#8217;s Ministry of Environment began its impact assessment of the ACP100  – the unit’s technical name – bringing the project into its next stage of development. China now joins the United States and Russia in the race for commercially viable SMR technology.</p>

<p>Belgium is one of the five major producers and distributors of radioisotopes for medical purposes. Each year, almost seven million patients around the world benefit from a medical examination that makes use of molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) produced in Belgium.</p>
<p>Currently, more than 25% of those isotopes for medical purposes are produced in SCK-CEN&#8217;s BR2 research reactor at Mol.</p>

<p>SAUDI ARABIA’s adoption of the Vision 2030 strategy, whose goal is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, was one of the boldest attempts by any Middle East nation to move towards a low-carbon economy, and, with its ambitious plans to build nearly 20 GWe of nuclear capacities in the coming decades. It is clear that nuclear power is to be a major part of bringing Vision 2030 to life.</p>
