However, much has changed in the short time since that report was published.</p>
<p>The global economy rebounded at record speed in 2021 from the COVID-19 pandemic, with GDP growth reaching 5.9%. As energy intensity improvements stalled, global energy demand increased by 5.4%.</p>

In June 2021, the G7 Leaders committed to “net zero no later than 2050” and to “lead a technology-driven transition to net zero, supported by relevant policies”. These commitments demonstrate political leadership and come at a critical time, ahead of the 26th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. G7 members – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States plus the European Union – in 2020 accounted for nearly 40% of the global economy, 30% of global energy demand and 25% of global energy-related CO2 emissions.</p>
