However, some regions of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet have lost mass over recent decades, prompting the need to re-evaluate its sensitivity to climate change.

Here we review the response of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet to past warm periods, synthesize current observations of change and evaluate future projections.

The primary objective of Cop26 is to nudge the world as low as possible within this target band, which was established under the Paris agreement.

That’s one of the findings of a new report by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), which estimates there is a gap of more than 300 GW needed to limit global warming.

Both the International Energy Agency and the International Renewable Energy Agency have previously said that around 850 GW of new hydropower capacity will be required by 2050 to keep temperatures below 2°C.

In the published report, G20 countries, which cause 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, will cause a temperature increase of 2.4°C in the world by the end of the century with their current climate targets. However, if these countries set ambitious emissions reduction targets for 2030 in line with the 1.5°C target and achieve net zero emissions by 2050, global temperature rise by the end of the century could be limited to 1.7°C.

Currently, there numerous projects underway to combat these concerns. In the beginnings of 2021, one of the more intriguing tidings of late came from Cerebrum Tech, founded by Dr. R. Erdem Erkul. The company, which is active in Turkey, the U.S., England, and South Korea, with the motto of “A company that gives inspiration for youth and the future” has announced a collaboration with Wi.Plat from South Korea, in order to work on technologies that enables the efficient use of water resources, savings in water consumption and sustainability.

The world’s biggest oil, natural gas and mining companies are stepping up their campaign to deploy carbon capture and storage, or CCS, as way to slow global warming. But with a potential $90-billion-a-year price tag, it’s too rich for them to do it on their own.

The technology siphons pollution away from the chimneys of industrial plants and injects it permanently underground.

Another 200GW is being built and 450GW is planned. More recently, 200GW has closed due to a wave of retirements across the EU and US. Another 170GW is set to retire by 2030 and 13 of the world’s 77 coal-powered countries plan a total phaseout.

Meanwhile, electricity generated from coal peaked in 2014, so the expanding fleet is running fewer hours than ever.

It is second only to water as the most-consumed resource on the planet.

But, while cement – the key ingredient in concrete – has shaped much of our built environment, it also has a massive carbon footprint.

Cement is the source of about 8% of the world’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, according to think tank Chatham House.

If the cement industry were a country, it would be the third largest emitter in the world – behind China and the US.

Back in 2009, John Ashton, then the UK foreign secretary’s special representative for climate change, argued: “There is no credible climate strategy that doesn’t include a strategy to get very quickly to the point where carbon capture and storage becomes the universal standard for all new coal and indeed all new gas-fired power generation.”

Nine years on, the plunging costs of renewable energy and battery storage have changed the debate somewhat.
