By 2030, the global economy will create more green jobs than the number lost during the pandemic if investments in renewable energy are increased in line with sustainability targets set under the Paris Agreements, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has said.

In its new Renewable Energy and Jobs Annual review 2021, complied in partnership with the International Labour Organisation, IRENA predicts that some 25 million new green jobs will be created by 2030, surpassing the 7 million lost due to the pandemic.

The share of renewable energy that achieved lower costs than the most competitive fossil fuel option doubled in 2020, a new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows. 162 gigawatts (GW) or 62 per cent of total renewable power generation added last year had lower costs than the cheapest new fossil fuel option.

The latest report on energy system developments shows that 176 GWs of new renewable energy capacity accounted for 72% of all new energy capacity additions in 2019.

The data, released in the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)’s annual Renewable Capacity Statistics 2020, showed that while the 2019 figure was slightly lower than 2018’s 179 GW the market continued to expand, up over 7.5%. Asia showed the most spectacular growth, with 54% of total additions while wind and solar power accounted by 90% of capacity deployed.

If the world does not step up efforts on renewable energy, it will fall short of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. This is according to a new report >>> compiled by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Specifically, SDG 7 sets out to “ensure access to affordable, reliable and modern energy for all”.

One-third of the world’s installed electricity generation capacity is from renewable sources, according to the latest industry statistics.

The data compiled by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows that two-thirds of the power capacity added around the world in 2018 was from renewables. Wind and solar accounted for 84% of that total.

2018 was characterized by a spate of solar and wind pricing breakthroughs. Falling interest rates for investors, ongoing technology improvements and regulatory frameworks that encourage competition among would-be developers have all played a part.
