With US$1.8 million in funding from Japan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a new project aimed at protecting the delicate marine ecosystem in Hatay Province in Turkey’s South. “Climate Action for Hatay” combines three aims: first, to remove waste from the Asi River as it drains into the Mediterranean at the city of Samandağ; second, to reduce waste dumping into the river through improved regulations and public education; and third, to counter the threats posed by the proliferation of the water hyacinth, an invasive species that clogs rivers, hurts water quality and threatens the local fishing economy.

Increasing concerns over energy security and climate change will mobilize record levels of new capacity to generate renewable energy in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency’s forecasts.

The IEA estimates that 320 gigawatts will be in effect this year, up from the previous record of 295 gigawatts in 2021. Britain plans to boost investments in renewable and climate change projects in Nigeria and will provide 10 million pounds ($13.6 million) of support, Minister for Africa Vicky Ford said on her first trip to the country.

According to a new report by the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC), the resulting climate impacts will cause irreversible devastation in G20 countries unless urgent action is taken to reduce emissions.

The first study of its kind, the G20 Atlas of Climate Impacts compiles scientific projections of how climate impacts could have implications for the world’s wealthiest countries in the coming years.
