This time last year, the two were evenly matched at 26% each.</p>
<p>Solar and wind energy are not the only renewable electricity sources, but they are building a dominant position in the market. IRENA’s figures show that solar and wind were responsible for 88% of all new renewable capacity in 2021.</p>

In response, the European Union is for ways to replace Russian gas imports in the short term, taking critical decisions over investment in infrastructure and economic relationships. </p>
<p>This joint analysis by <strong>Bellona, Ember, E3G</strong> and<strong> Regulatory Assistance Project</strong> finds that:</p>

The Spanish utility has started the process with the country’s Ecological Transition ministry to build a 590-megawatt farm in the Western region of Extremadura, according to a statement Thursday. The company will now follow government rules to hold public hearings and collect comments on the impact on the environment and for landowners, a mandatory process before starting the project.</p>

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Solargiga Energy in China recently published the results of research in which they saw improved thermal stability of perovskite solar cells and their efficiency increasing from 17% to 20%. This was achieved by applying caffeine on the perovskite layer.</p>
<p>The idea began as a joke over morning coffee, the researchers said in an interview. “One day, as we were discussing perovskite solar cells, our colleague Rui Wang said: &#8216;If we need coffee to boost our energy then what about perovskites?</p>

<p>Last year was the first time since 2001 that growth in renewable power capacity failed to increase year on year. New net capacity from solar PV, wind, hydro, bioenergy, and other renewable power sources increased by about 180 Gigawatts (GW) in 2018, the same as the previous year, according to the International Energy Agency’s latest data.</p>

Wind and solar power provided 6 per cent of the world’s electricity in 2017, according to the International Energy Agency. By 2040, they are projected to provide 21 per cent in the IEA’s New Policies Scenario, which reflects governments’ announced policies and targets. In the Sustainable Development Scenario, showing a system on track to provide universal energy access while limiting the threat from climate change, they provide 38 per cent.</p>

<p>The data compiled by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows that two-thirds of the power capacity added around the world in 2018 was from renewables. Wind and solar accounted for 84% of that total.</p>
<p>2018 was characterized by a spate of solar and wind pricing breakthroughs. Falling interest rates for investors, ongoing technology improvements and regulatory frameworks that encourage competition among would-be developers have all played a part.</p>
