Global wind power installations must increase three times faster than the current pace over the next decade to allow countries to stay on a net zero pathway and limit global warming. That’s according to a new report by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), which suggests a minimum of 180GW of new wind energy is needed every single year to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

The data shows the wind industry installed 93GW of new wind last year, helping the current total global capacity reach 743GW.

The 15th flagship Global Wind Report 2019 by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) provides a comprehensive overview of the global wind industry through the latest market data, country profiles, trends and analysis from GWEC Market Intelligence. Wind energy has expanded by leaps and bounds in the last 20 years, becoming a mainstream source of clean, cost-competitive energy around the world.

Key findings:

– 60.4 GW of wind energy capacity was installed globally in 2019, a 19 per cent increase from installations in 2018 and the second-best year for wind historically.

Spanish utility Iberdrola is heading a consortium aiming to develop a large-scale floating offshore wind turbine in the North Sea, as the sector looks to drive up the size of technology and push down costs.

In an announcement Monday, the firm said the turbine would be in excess of 10 megawatts (MW) and tested at the Marine Energy Test Centre in Norway. The average size of offshore turbines installed in 2019 was 7.8 MW, according to trade body WindEurope.
