US-headquartered global car manufacturer Ford has announced that it will invest $11.4 billion to produce electric vehicles for the US market. The investment will allow Ford to build 4 new manufacturing facilities for electric vehicles and batteries, and create 11,000 jobs by 2025.

The automaker will build its biggest production facility in Tennessee and two battery packs in Kentucky. The projects will be implemented in partnership with the South Korean firm SK Innovation.

Germany has reached its target of one million registered battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, said the government in a press release. This means the country has reached its 2020-goal around about half a year later than originally planned.

Fifty-four percent of the registered electric vehicles are battery-electric, 46 percent plug-in hybrids, said the government. “Our transport will be irreversibly converted to renewable energies,” said economy minister Peter Altmaier and called reaching the target a “decisive milestone”.

China is already dominating the emerging EV market, with about 40 percent of global production, and plans to expand even more rapidly over the next few years. The United States, on the other hand, currently produces only about 20 percent of the world’s EVs and its market and production are not growing as quickly.

Overall, China now produces more than 25% of all manufacturing globally, up from just 8% in 2000, while the US share dropped from 22% to 15% over the same period.
