Global electric vehicle sales jumped 69% in January from a year earlier but were down 26% from December, reflecting subsidy cuts or tighter rules in Germany and France and seasonally weaker sales in China, market research firm Rho Motion said on Wednesday.

Sales of fully-electric cars, or battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and plug-in hybrids hit 1.1 million in January, up from 660,000 in January 2023.

Rho Motion data manager Charles Lester told Reuters that EV sales in Germany and France fell around 50% in January versus December after Germany scrapped its subsidies and France tightened requirements for its subsidies.

Global electric vehicle sales hit an all-time high of 6.75 million in 2021, up 108% year-on-year, according to EV volumes.com data. Despite the epidemic, electric vehicle sales were 3.24 million units in 2020.

While the market share of electric vehicles was 0.2% in 2012, the record sales reached 8.3% last year. Thus, the market share of electric vehicles increased 41 times in 10 years.

According to the data of the International Energy Agency (IEA), 130,000 electric vehicles were sold throughout the year in 2012, while this figure was reached in one week in 2021, and Tesla ranked first in electric vehicle sales with 936,000 units last year.

Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in Europe doubled during the first months of 2020, while overall passenger cars fell by 25.6% compared to the same period last year. Data by the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) shows that electric cars still only accounted for 4% of total.

The EAFO, which collects data for all vehicle types and for infrastructure when it comes to alternative fuels (electric, hydrogen, LPG, LNG, CNG, biofuels), noticed that these accounted for 5.4% of total in 2019 and the amount of BEV registrations alone rose by more than 100% in the first quarter of 2020.

In November, California reportedly crossed the 500,000 threshold for electric vehicles sold in the state since 2010. Months of strong US sales in 2018, preceded by a strong 2017, are starting to show a trend: electric vehicles are selling well, especially in places where there are strong monetary and non-monetary incentives to buy them.

According to Veloz—a group of electric vehicle industry stakeholders that includes GM, Honda, Nissan, Pacific Gas & Electric, Uber, and Lyft, among others—electric vehicle sales in California hit a cumulative 512,717 since 2010.
