Climate change challenges and the rise of renewable energy sources are increasing the social and environmental pressure on oil companies to re-position themselves in the societies in which they operate. They have been doing this in a variety of different ways.

Firstly, some oil companies have continued with business as usual and are strengthening their current strategies of oil extraction to maximise profits. Secondly, other oil companies have switched to low carbon sources, such as natural gas, blue hydrogen and biofuels.

The UK Government’s direct investments in fusion energy over the past decade has helped boost the economy by £1.4 billion.

That’s according to a new study by London Economics and published by BEIS, which reveals the investment of £346.7 million has also supported an average of 4,000 jobs every year.

The study looked at the financial and economic impacts of public investments in the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s (UKAEA) fusion research from 2009 and 2019 and found that for every £1 invested in UKAEA, around £4 is generated in return.
