While the European Union (EU) member countries agreed on the common gas purchase, they could not reach an agreement on the ceiling price for natural gas.

The energy ministers of the EU member states met in Prague, hosted by the Czech Republic, the term president.

In a statement to Reuters, it was stated that Algeria will supply 4 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas to Italy this year, in addition to the 21 billion cubic meters planned earlier this year.

The source said that state oil producer Sonatrach plans to start increasing supplies to Italian customers, including Eni, next week. Tighter global energy markets have increased demand for Algerian gas.

Sonatrach is already an important gas supplier to countries including Italy, Spain and Portugal, and stated that it is reviewing gas prices with all its customers to take advantage of the appropriate market.

Spanish power plants bought more natural gas to generate electricity on Wednesday than on any other day since records began, transmission system operator Enagas (ENAG.MC) said on Thursday.

While the extreme summer heat increases the demand for electric air conditioners, cheaper and renewable energy sources contribute less to the system. Iran’s oil minister has agreed to revive a long-stalled project to lay an undersea pipeline to carry gas to Oman, the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.

Iran has one of the world’s largest gas reserves, followed by Oman as it hopes to fill its energy-intensive industries and liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities. In 2013, the two countries signed an agreement worth $60 billion for Iran to supply gas to Oman via a submarine pipeline.

BP is abandoning its stake in Russian oil giant Rosneft in an abrupt and costly end to three decades of operating in the energy-rich country, marking the most significant move yet by a Western company in response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Rosneft accounts for around half of BP’s oil and gas reserves and a third of its production and divesting the 19.75% stake will result in charges of up to $25 billion, the British company said, without saying how it plans to extricate itself.

The gas price at Waha registered a low last Thursday of minus $2.50 per million British Thermal Units and closed at minus $1.95, its lowest level since S&P Global Platts started collecting the data back in 1994. Calls for cleaner air and cuts in carbon emissions should boost global demand for natural gas over the next few decades, says Royal Dutch Shell.

The Anglo-Dutch energy company expects gas to account for more than 40 per cent of total energy growth until 2035, according to the company’s annual outlook for liquefied natural gas. This makes gas the largest source of growth in global energy usage over that period.

For the global energy industry, China’s importance is hard to overstate. It is the world’s largest oil importer and is on course to be the largest gas importer this year. It accounts for about half the world’s coal consumption and almost a third of global investment in “clean” energy.
