China’s installed wind and solar capacity will overtake coal for the first time this year, an industry body forecast on Tuesday.

The China Electricity Council (CEC) in a yearly report said grid-connected wind and solar would make up around 40% of installed power generation capacity by the end of 2024, compared with coal’s expected 37%.

By comparison, wind and solar together were around 36% of capacity at the end of 2023, and coal was just under 40%.

Fossil fuels have surpassed renewables to become the European Union’s largest source of power generation as use of natural gas reached its highest point in a decade, the bloc’s statistics office said on Thursday.

While Eurostat says renewables topped the list in the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, the economic recovery saw the region’s electricity supply increase by 4% in 2021, with coal, oil and gas.

China has become the center of gravity for global energy markets. While there is rich extant literature on India’s dependence on and its long-term need for natural gas and coal, there is not a similar understanding of non-fuel minerals, particularly the critical minerals. A study by the Department of Science and Technology and the Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (DST-CEEW, 2016) points out that there isn’t enough research in India on ensuring mineral resource security for the manufacturing sector.[1] The study looked at 49 non-fuel minerals, including rare earth minerals, and assessed the impact of critical minerals on manufacturing sector due to supply constraints.[2]

The criticality of non-fuel minerals has been evaluated through considering economic importance and the supply-side risks.

Poland, isn’t ready to resume talks with the European Union about the mid-century climate neutrality deadline during the bloc’s summit in June, according to a senior government official.

The country endorsed the carbon neutrality goal at the bloc’s last meeting in December, but was the only member state declaring that it’s not bound by the deadline because of the effort and expense required. Coal-dependent Poland needs more time to figure out its investment needs and future energy mix, according the official, who asked not to be named.

The reigning narrative of impending global environmental catastrophe dominates the airwaves and print media. Short of a drastic reduction in the use of fossil fuels, it is asserted, we are fast approaching the “end of days”. The demonization of fossils fuels in general, and coal in particular, has been wrought under pressure from special interests groups and organized lobbies of the climate-industrial complex where aspects of economic reality are caricatured or presented out of context. Complex trade-offs in energy policy are spun into tales of spurious simplicity, leading to misleading conclusions.
