UNDP Joins Hands with Sweden in Fight “For People and Planet”

Amplifying calls for greater ambition on climate change and other environmental challenges in Turkey and around the world, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul organized a reception yesterday to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm.

The reception at the Swedish Palace in Istanbul was one of a series of events taking place in 59 countries ahead of Stockholm+50, an international meeting to be held on 02-03 June 2022 in Stockholm with the aim of breathing new life into efforts to protect the planet.

Popular Turkish cartoon character King Shakir and his friends are urging young people to make the world a greener, healthier and more equitable place through a campaign launched this week by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The campaign is designed to introduce children and their parents to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and build support for the fight against inequality and climate change.

King Shakir is a Turkish TV cartoon created by Varol Yaşaroğlu, along with the creative works of Berk Tokay and Haluk Can Dizdaroğlu and produced by Grafi2000 for Cartoon Network Turkey.

UNDP Supports Turkey in Charting a Course to Net Zero by 2053

In the wake of Turkey’s ratification earlier this year of the Paris Agreement and commitment to achieve a net-zero balance in carbon emissions by 2053, the focus has shifted to the drafting the detailed plans and adopting the policies that will be vital to ensure the country achieves these goals. These efforts took a big step forward today, with the announcement by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that they are joining forces to prepare a long-term climate change strategy and an action plan that will reflect Turkey’s bolder climate ambitions.
