Australia’s New South Wales state on Friday said it would invest A$1.2 billion ($850 million) in new transmission lines over 10 years to speed up connections to the grid for new renewable energy projects as the state looks to shift to greener power.

Australia’s New South Wales state on Friday said it would invest A$1.2 billion ($850 million) in new transmission lines over 10 years to speed up connections to the grid for new renewable energy projects as the state looks to shift to greener power.

State Treasurer Matt Kean said with the A$1.2 billion Transmission Acceleration Facility, the state hopes to attract least A$14 billion in private investment in transmission infrastructure.

Australia finally has a net zero target. Even without being legislated, it matters as a signal. It will effectively be bipartisan, a rare and valuable thing in Australia’s climate policy. Of course the long-term goal could be used to deflect from the fact that not much is being done to put Australia on a low-carbon pathway right now, but it must be taken at face value if we are to stand a chance.

While 98% of the energy it uses is fossil fuel, Singapore is the world record holder in this field, while this country meets 73% of its energy needs from oil consumption.

Fossil fuel use is 93 percent in Australia and 91 percent in South Africa. In Luxembourg and the Netherlands, the use of fossil fuels is 90 percent.

While coal consumption in South Africa covers 73 percent of all fossil fuels, in the Netherlands 45 percent of total energy consumption is met from natural gas.

Asian spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices rose this week as there were supply issues in Australia and the United States, while several buyers were looking for cargoes. The average LNG price for October delivery into northeast Asia LNG-AS was estimated at $4.5 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), $0.45 per mmBtu above last week’s level, market sources said.

This is the highest price since late January, Reuters price assessment data showed.

Royal Dutch Shell said on Wednesday it has begun output at its Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility in Australia, the world’s largest floating production structure and the last of a wave of eight LNG projects built in the country over the last decade.

Though the project started up later and cost more than originally estimated, it is expected to further cement Australia’s lead as the world’s biggest LNG exporter, after the country took the crown in November.
